The Future of Government Communication
A creative vision for informing, engaging and empowering every New Yorker.
Before We Begin
I wasn't asked to create this presentation. I made it because I believe public service deserves exceptional communication. The Office of the New York City Comptroller has an important story to tell and these are a few ideas for how I think that story could reach every New Yorker.
Good work deserves good communication.
Making Transparency Visible
The Comptroller’s Office is complex by nature. The role of communications isn't simply to share that work. It's to communicate it in ways that are clear, accessible and meaningful. In today's digital landscape, transparency depends on more than making information available. It depends on making information understandable. That's where thoughtful communication has the power to build trust and encourage meaningful engagement.
This isn’t about content.
Let’s Zoom Out
I've spent time exploring the Office's digital presence and one thing stood out immediately. The work is already there. The reports, testimony, audits, announcements and policy initiatives are consistently communicated across every platform. The substance isn't missing.
What I see is an opportunity to take the next step. Many posts communicate what happened, but today's audiences are just as interested in why it matters. The strongest digital communication doesn't stop at sharing information. It interprets it, providing context, relevance and clarity in ways that are quick to understand and easy to remember.
The way people consume information has changed. They aren't reading less because they care less. They're navigating more information than ever before. That means every post, video and graphic has to earn attention by making complex ideas feel approachable without losing the integrity of the work behind them.
